![]() The Barossa Ancestry Shiraz Viognier is a supremely elegant wine and is Steinborner Family Vineyards’ very smart interpretation of the famed Cote Rotie approach. The wine is a co-fermentation of a judicious amount of a white Rhone Valley grape called Viognier (pronounced vee-OH-nyay) with ‘fully flavour ripe’ old vine Shiraz. The wine spent 2 years maturing in a blend of French and American oak. Viognier’s contribution is less about flavour and far more about structural complexity. The Viognier intensifies colour and lifts the bouquet, enhancing the fragrance of the Shiraz, as well as enriching the palate, adding texture and smoothness. The wine was originally developed by Steinborner Family Vineyards to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the arrival of Wilhelm Steinborner (pictured on the label), together with his bride Caroliene (nee Prufer), in May 1865, at Gomersal having travelled from Milostowo, Posen in Prussia. This Shiraz Viognier is a vibrant crimson in colour, the viognier subtly delivers a lifted perfumed nose of cherry, blackberry, spice and a hint of apricot. The elegant well structured palate is mouth-filling and approachable, with cherry, berry, and spiced flavours together with a fine hint of mocha, which gives way to a silky smooth, persistent finish – a delicious soft wine.
Awards & ReviewsJames Halliday 2011 Wine Companion 4.5 glass rating Barossa Ancestry Shiraz Viognier 2007, 90 points. “The five generation family tree is shown on the front label, dating back to the arrival of the family in 1865. The wine, with 3% co-fermented viognier is 21st century in style. Japan’s International Sommelier Mr. Satoru Mori Barossa Ancestry Shiraz-Viognier Bright, black cherry red and shiny, with condensed colour and viscosity. The first impressions on the nose are of the floral scents of violet and roses, as the wine opens up this becomes quite strong. This wine is also equipped with the purity of the Barossa Deutsche. The cassis, etc are concentrated like fruit compote and the sweet and bitter spices, the floral aroma and again the fruit scents leave a strong standing impression. Each of these complex flavours, melt or mold very well together. The taste is mild and soft, the attack smooth. The acid and alcohol levels are well balanced and overall the wine feels very elegant. The tannins are even smoother, mellow and well combined. The aftertaste again continues to be floral in flavour. The taste overall is deeply gorgeous. I think that that cellaring for a couple of years will be rewarded and this will be a brilliant wine. James Halliday Wine Companion 2010 4 glass rating Barossa Ancestry Shiraz Viognier 2004, 89 points. “Pleasant medium bodied palate, with soft approachable red fruits influenced by the 3% viognier.” Bronze Medal 2006 Rutherglen Wine Show Bronze Medal 2007 Barossa Wine Show SFV 2004 Barossa Ancestry Shiraz-Viognier Tony Love, The Advertiser June 6, 2007 Subtitled Barossa Ancestry, it has a subtly lifted nose via its 3 percent viognier from the same vineyard as the Shiraz that’s tight and muscly on the palate. Full of the tenacity that small Barossa Vignerons proudly possess. |
